While there are many different types of telecommuter jobs, all of which require different skills, there are a few basic programs that it’s good to be familiar with if you’re planning on working from home.

This is an inexpensive way to build skills on your own time, and can make a huge difference in your applications and proposals being recognized by employers.

Computer Literacy for Windows with Gerrick Chow
A great course for anyone still in the beginning phases with computers, or if you’ve been out of the game a while and want to brush up on your knowledge. This course focuses on literacy for PC users.
Computer Literacy for Mac with Gerrick Chow
This is essentially the same course as above, but with a focus on Mac users.
Up and Running with Office 365 with Nick Brazzi
Microsoft Office (most typically used on a PC) includes the word processing software, spreadsheets, and presentation software. Most telecommute companies will expect you to have a good grasp on these programs.
Business Etiquette: Phone, Email, and Text with Suzanna Kaye
This course goes over basic business skills, but with a focus on conducting your business online. A great crash course in communication skills for telecommuters.
Writing Email with Judy Steiner-Williams
Another course focused on building your digital business communication skills, this a great series about writing professional emails.
Gmail Essential Training with Jess Stratton
Using the wide array of free tools that Google has made available will be a major part of your telecommute job. Because these applications are all mobile–meaning you can access them from any computer, anywhere–you’ll get a lot of use out of them.
